Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. It lies at the point where the River Lagan flows into Belfast Lough, a bay of the Irish Sea that separates Northern Ireland from Scotland. As of the 2001 census, Belfast proper had a population of 276,459, while the metropolitan area contained 579,544. Belfast lies in the province of Ulster, one of the four historical provinces of Ireland.
Belfast has a very temperate climate, which is typically coldest in January (average high of 6 and low of 2) and warmest in July and August (average high of 18 and low of 11). The city is served by Belfast International Airport, which is located 21 km northwest of the city, near Lough Neah. There is also a smaller airport located within city limits, George Best Belfast City Airport, which is named after Belfast’s favourite son, the famed footballer. By sea, visitors can come to Belfast via ferries from the Scottish ports of Troon and Stranner, the Isle of Man, or Liverpool. The city is also accessible via several major highways.
